Serenity Tips

Martha's Vineyard is a nice place to unwind. On a couple of recent occasions I have received memorable tips from my fellow unwinders.

1. Walking (more accurately, losing) my dog in the Trade Winds Field Preserve, I had a momentary Deep Feeling, and stopped by the side of the path to jot some accompanying words down in my phone's notepad. A man, somewhat older than myself, perhaps full of wisdom, jogged towards me. As he passed, he said "This is what it's come to! Standing in this place looking at a phone!" Recognizing the irony, I said, "I know, amazing, right?" He replies "It's not amazing! It's TERRIBLE!"

2. Dropping my daughter off at camp at the Farm Institute, I exchanged "good morning"s with another man with a whiff of wisdom about him. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and I was moved to add, "What a beautiful day!" My fellow traveler replied, "EVERY day is a beautiful day," and stalked off.
